15.

The afternoon to board the ferry arrived, the final day. There was a white delivery van full of boxes, books, suitcases, a wardrobe, and toys that Caterina and I didn’t have the courage to abandon. But nothing I brought with me had anything to do with my life up until that moment. Outside of the house, far from the sea lights, every object, every dress, and every book lost its meaning, was stripped of memories. What I cared about most I couldn’t bring with me. I left behind my room, the wind off the sea entering through the window, the light glittering on the granite, pyrite sticking to my feet, Irma the dog, the smell of the port, the smell of my smell. Those were the only true signs of my early life, which would come to a close along with the door of the Rio Marina at 3:00 P.M. on September 2nd, 1983. Before getting on the boat I did something absurd: I jumped from the dock to the beach, grabbed a handful of sand and shoved it in my mouth. I tried to swallow but only partially succeeded. I spat several times, and for a few hours afterwards I had sand grains scraping between my teeth. Once we embarked, after waving goodbye to Pietro, Pietro who stood motionless with his head lifted, I went inside the cabin and didn’t look out once during the trip. My mouth had a horrendous taste and I sat in an armchair below deck, keeping my eyes closed with the hope of falling asleep. I felt seasick for the first time, and from that day forward I would always suffer from it.
